Children's Dentistry
Gentle, family-friendly dental care for children starting from their very first visit.
Children's Dentistry
Dr. Schlindwein and Dr. Davies recommend bringing your child to the dentist by their first birthday or when the first teeth arrive, whichever comes first. Starting early helps establish healthy habits and gives your child a positive relationship with dental care.
Helpful tips for parents:
Begin helping your child floss when their last two molars come together, usually around ages 2.5 to 3.
Parents should brush their child's teeth until around ages 7 to 9, or until the child can tie their shoes or cut their own food.
Curb thumb-sucking by approximately age 5 to prevent developmental issues.
Avoid letting young children carry sippy cups containing anything other than water.
Cut down on sugary snacks and juices between meals. Eating or drinking sugary foods throughout the day is one of the leading causes of cavities.
Limit sticky foods such as raisins and fruit roll-ups, which can get wedged in the teeth. Encourage a sip of water after snacks.
Take care of your own oral health. Research shows that decay-causing bacteria can be passed from caregivers to young children.
Limit sharing of spoons and bottles between caregivers and children.
